FCO airport to Rome city centre
Land, follow the train signs, and 32 minutes later you're at Termini.
Rome's Fiumicino airport (FCO) is 32 minutes from Roma Termini on the Leonardo Express, a non-stop train that leaves every 15 minutes from a station right by the terminals. The buses to Termini take about 50 to 55 minutes for a lower fare, and a white city taxi takes you anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, the ancient walls around the historic centre, for a fixed €55.
FCO airport to central Rome: train, bus or taxi
Fiumicino (FCO), Rome’s main airport, has its own train station a short walk from the terminals, and the Leonardo Express leaves it for Roma Termini, the city’s central station, every 15 minutes. It doesn’t stop on the way, so you’re there in 32 minutes, bags and all.
The train isn’t the only good answer, though. Where your hotel is and how many of you are travelling change the pick, and so does the time you land.

Leonardo Express: Fiumicino to Termini in 32 minutes
From arrivals, follow the train signs to the station, which sits inside the airport area next to the terminals. The Leonardo Express is the white-and-green non-stop service, and large suitcases ride at no extra charge.
You can buy the ticket before you fly and walk past the ticket office queue: the Leonardo Express to or from Termini, €17.90. Once validated, a ticket is good for 90 minutes. ATAC city tickets, the ones for Rome’s buses and metro, aren’t valid on this train.
From the plane to Termini
- 1Follow the train signs from the arrivals hall to the airport station.
- 2Go through the gates with your ticket and board the Leonardo Express.
- 3Ride non-stop for 32 minutes to Roma Termini.
- 4Keep your ticket: you need it again to get out through the gates at Termini.
Flying home works the same way in reverse, from Termini to the airport, and you’ll need the ticket for the gates at Fiumicino too. Both one-way tickets are sold separately as well:
The departure times shift through the year, so check the timetable of Trenitalia, the rail company, for the first and last trains on your date.
FL1 train from Fiumicino to Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina
The other train from the airport station is the FL1, a regional line that runs across Rome without going to Termini. It stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina, among others, so if your hotel is near one of those, it drops you closer than the Leonardo Express would.
The FL1 leaves every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends and on public holidays. Tickets are sold at the station’s ticket office and machines and online. If you buy online, print the ticket, because the gates at Fiumicino need it on paper. Engineering works sometimes replace trains with buses, so glance at Trenitalia’s notices before you travel.
Fiumicino airport buses to Termini and the Vatican
Buses take longer, about 50 to 55 minutes to Termini, and cost less than the train. Rome Airport Bus, SIT Bus Shuttle, T.A.M. and Terravision all run from Fiumicino to Termini, and other routes go to Tiburtina, the Vatican area and Ostiense. Cotral buses leave from the stop by Terminal 3.
You can book the Termini buses before you fly, like the SIT bus to or from Termini, €7, with Wi-Fi on board, and the Terravision shuttle, €7, air-conditioned and with Wi-Fi.
If you’re staying near St Peter’s, the bus to the Vatican, which leaves every 20 minutes, saves you crossing the city from Termini. And the buses are your best bet if you land late: official sources disagree on when the last Leonardo Express leaves the airport (from 23:23 to 00:23), while several companies run night buses to Termini after midnight.
Taxi from Fiumicino airport: the €55 fixed fare
Taxis from Fiumicino charge a fixed fare, set by the city and posted by the airport, with all supplements included and the same price in both directions. For three or four people with luggage, that one price takes you all to the door.
Fixed taxi fares from Fiumicino (October 2026)
- Centre, inside the Aurelian Walls
- €55
- Ostiense station
- €50
- Tiburtina station
- €60
- Ciampino airport
- €55
- Civitavecchia cruise port
- €130
- Elsewhere inside the GRA ring road
- No fixed fare, maximum €80
Taking a taxi at Fiumicino
- 1Head to the rank on the arrivals level outside Terminal 1 or 3, on the main road in front of each, or on the side road in front of the train station.
- 2Check it's a city taxi: white, with the word TAXI on the roof, the city's crest on the front doors and the licence number on the doors, the back and inside.
- 3Give your address and pay the fare from the list above when you get there.
The airport warns that cars waiting outside the official ranks may have no licence and charge more, so turn down anyone offering you a ride inside the terminal. A private car with driver (an NCC in Italy) has to be booked ahead; it can’t pick you up from the taxi rank.
Shared minivan from FCO to your hotel
Between the bus and the taxi there’s the shared minivan, which collects you at the airport and drops you at your hotel, with other passengers along the way: a shared transfer to your Rome hotel, €27.67. You choose one way or a return at checkout. It covers Fiumicino only, not Ciampino.
Does the Roma Pass cover Fiumicino airport transport?
No. The Roma Pass covers Rome’s city buses, trams and metro, but neither the Leonardo Express nor the FL1, so buying it at the airport won’t pay for your train into town. The Omnia Card 72h includes a Roma Pass with the same rules. The one airport where the card pays for the ride is Ciampino: the ATAC 720 and 520 city buses from there are covered.
Ciampino airport (CIA) to Rome
Ciampino is Rome’s second airport, and it has no train station or metro at the terminal, so every way into town starts on a bus or in a car.
The train still has a part in it, though. The Ciampino Airlink is a bus to Ciampino station and then a train to Termini, about 30 minutes in all for €2.70 (October 2026). The direct buses to Termini take about 40 to 45 minutes.
With luggage, the direct buses are the simplest option, because you stay on the same bus all the way to Termini. You can book the bus from Ciampino to Termini, €8, air-conditioned and with Wi-Fi, and the trip back is sold too:
With the Roma Pass, the ATAC city buses are the other way in: the 720 runs to Laurentina, on metro line B, and the 520 to Subaugusta and Cinecittà, on line A; without the card, a standard BIT ticket costs €1.50 (ATAC, October 2026). A taxi is the fixed €40 into the walls, so you know the price before you get in.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from FCO airport to Rome city centre?
The Leonardo Express train runs non-stop from Fiumicino to Roma Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes. Buses to Termini take about 50 to 55 minutes, the FL1 regional train serves Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina, and a taxi costs a fixed €55 to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls.
How much is a taxi from Fiumicino airport to Rome?
A fixed €55 per trip, in either direction, to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, with all supplements included (airport rates, October 2026). Take an official white taxi from the rank outside Terminal 1 or 3, not a driver who approaches you inside the airport.
Should I take the Leonardo Express or the FL1 train?
It depends where you're staying. The Leonardo Express is the only train that goes to Termini, non-stop in 32 minutes. The FL1 doesn't stop at Termini; it's the better train if your hotel is near Trastevere, Ostiense or Tiburtina.
Does the Roma Pass cover the train from Fiumicino airport?
No. The Roma Pass covers neither the Leonardo Express nor the FL1, and ATAC city tickets aren't valid on the Leonardo Express either. The only airport transport it covers is the ATAC 720 and 520 city buses from Ciampino, Rome's second airport.
How do I get into Rome if I land at Fiumicino after midnight?
Take a night bus or a taxi. Several bus companies run night services from Fiumicino to Termini after midnight, while Trenitalia's and the airport's own pages give different times for the last Leonardo Express from the airport (from 23:23 to 00:23), so don't count on the train if you land late.
Is Ciampino the same airport as Fiumicino?
No. Fiumicino (FCO) is Rome's main airport and Ciampino (CIA) is the second one. Ciampino has no train station at the terminal: you get into town by bus, or by the Ciampino Airlink, a bus to Ciampino station and then a train to Termini.
