Florence airport to the city centre

Peretola is four kilometres from the old centre, close enough to get there on a city tram ticket.

Florence's airport, Peretola (FLR), is 4 km from the centre. The T2 tram leaves from a stop two minutes from arrivals and reaches Santa Maria Novella station in about 20 minutes, on a €2 ticket you can pay by tapping a contactless card on board. A taxi costs a fixed €28 by day to hotels in the central area. If you fly into Pisa (PSA) instead, a direct bus gets you to Florence, by Santa Maria Novella station, in about 70 minutes.

Florence airport (Peretola) or Pisa airport

If you’re flying to Florence, you’ll land at one of two airports. Peretola (FLR), officially named Amerigo Vespucci, after the Florentine navigator, is the city’s own, 4 km from the old centre and linked to it by tram. Pisa’s Galileo Galilei (PSA), with Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air among its airlines, is about 70 minutes from Florence on the direct bus.

Peretola has a single short runway, and in strong wind some flights are diverted to Pisa or Bologna. So even with a ticket to Florence, the Pisa routes further down are worth knowing.

Pisa, by rail
PisaMover and regional train, 1 hour 11 to 1 hour 40, €16.30 on one ticket (October 2026)

The T2 tram from Florence airport to Santa Maria Novella

Peretola Aeroporto is the end of the T2 line, so any tram waiting at the stop is heading into Florence. From Monday to Saturday one leaves every 4 to 6 minutes between 06:30 and 20:30, and on Sundays every 7 to 11 minutes. The first leaves the airport at 05:00 every day, and the last at 23:58 from Sunday to Thursday and at 01:15 on Friday and Saturday nights.

A ticket costs €2 and is valid for 90 minutes. The fare went up in August 2026, so guides that still say €1.50 or €1.70 are out of date. You don’t need the machine at the stop: tap a contactless bank card, phone or watch on the reader inside the tram and that’s your ticket, at the same price.

Each card pays for one person, so a couple needs two cards, or can buy tickets in “at bus”, the app of Autolinee Toscane, the Tuscan bus company, whose city tickets are valid on the tram too. Children under 11 travel free, and if you’re buying the Firenze Card (€94) for the museums, it covers no transport, so you still need a ticket. A paper ticket from the stop’s machine, which takes cards, has to be validated as soon as you board.

Peretola to Santa Maria Novella on the T2

  1. 1Walk out of arrivals to the Peretola Aeroporto tram stop, two minutes away.
  2. 2Tap your contactless card on the reader inside the tram, or validate a ticket from the stop's machine as you board.
  3. 3Ride about 20 minutes into the city.
  4. 4Get off at Alamanni-Stazione for Santa Maria Novella station, or at Valfonda Stazione, the stop after it.

Since January 2025 the T2 doesn’t end at the station: it carries on past Fortezza and Piazza della Libertà to Piazza San Marco, next to the Museo di San Marco, about 35 minutes from the airport. Older guides still send you to Unità, a stop the T2 no longer serves. If you’re flying out early, the first T2 back to the airport leaves San Marco at 05:10.

Check your luggage before you count on the tram. One bag of up to 10 kg and 55 × 40 × 20 cm rides free, while a bigger one, up to 80 × 45 × 25 cm and 20 kg, needs a ticket of its own, and each person can take up to two of those. Anything larger or heavier isn’t allowed on board and there’s no luggage rack, so if your checked suitcase is over those limits, take a taxi or the transfer.

Taxis wait at the rank outside arrivals, and from the airport to a hotel or any address in the central area they charge a fixed fare set by the city of Florence. You pay the same whatever the traffic, and the ride takes about 15 to 25 minutes.

Peretola taxi fares to the central area (city tariff of 2024)

By day
€28
Sundays and public holidays
€30
At night, 22:00 to 06:00
€32
Each bag, and a fourth passenger
€1.10 extra, up to €13.20 in all

Beyond the central area the meter runs instead, with a €3 supplement for starting at the airport. The same fixed fare applies from a hotel in the central area back to the airport, and the two cooperatives that serve the airport, 4242 and 4390, take bookings for that ride by phone, message or app.

Private transfer from Florence airport, with a driver in arrivals

If you’d rather have someone waiting, a private transfer from Florence airport to your hotel, from €54, has a driver meet you in the arrivals hall and take you to the door. Each traveller can bring a suitcase and a carry-on, you can ask for child seats, and cancelling is free up to 24 hours before.

The transfer is booked for a landing at Peretola, so if your flight is cancelled or the wind diverts it to Pisa or Bologna, it doesn’t run and isn’t refunded. Land in Pisa and the bus and train below still get you to Florence.

For the trip home, the same company runs a private transfer from your hotel to Florence airport, from €54, and suggests being collected two and a half hours before your flight.

At Pisa, the bus to Florence leaves from Piazzale D’Ascanio at the airport and goes straight to Piazzale Montelungo, by Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station, in about 70 minutes with no change: the direct bus from Pisa airport to Florence, from €13.99. Two bags are included, one small (up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg) and one large (up to 70 × 50 × 30 cm and 30 kg), a third costs extra, and there’s Wi-Fi on board.

The same bus runs back from Piazzale Montelungo to Pisa airport for your flight home. There’s no published timetable: the booking page shows the departures for your date, and cancelling is free up to 24 hours before.

The PisaMover is an automated shuttle that leaves from a stop by the terminal, signposted from arrivals, and reaches Pisa Centrale in about 5 minutes. From there, regional trains to Firenze Santa Maria Novella run about three times an hour by day and take between 52 minutes and 1 hour 22.

One Trenitalia ticket covers both legs if you choose Pisa Aeroporto as your departure station: €16.30 to Florence, with the whole trip taking 1 hour 11 to 1 hour 40 depending on the connection (October 2026). The PisaMover on its own is €6.50, from the machines at its stops.

  1. 1Buy one Trenitalia ticket from Pisa Aeroporto to Firenze S. M. Novella, in the app, online or at a machine.
  2. 2Follow the signs from arrivals to the PisaMover and show your ticket at the gates.
  3. 3At Pisa Centrale, where the shuttle comes in by platform 14, take a regional train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella.

The last connection of the day leaves the airport at 22:10 for the 22:30 train from Pisa Centrale, which reaches Florence at 23:50, and the first is the 06:10 shuttle for the 06:29 train (November 2026 timetable). The PisaMover itself runs from 06:00 to midnight, and until 01:00 from June to September. Until 13 December 2026, and again from 11 January to 28 February 2027, maintenance leaves a single shuttle running, every 12 to 15 minutes.
