From Milan's airports to the city centre

Two of Milan's airports have a train or a metro at the terminal; the third sends you into town by coach.

From Milan's Malpensa airport (MXP), the Malpensa Express train reaches Milano Centrale in about 51 minutes, on a ticket we sell for €15, and a taxi costs a fixed €114. Linate (LIN) is 12 minutes from San Babila on the M4 metro, and from Orio al Serio, outside Bergamo (BGY), coaches take 50 to 60 minutes to Centrale.

Milan’s airports: Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo

Malpensa is where the choices are: a train to either of two stations, a coach or a fixed-fare taxi. Linate is one metro line, and Bergamo’s airport, Orio al Serio, is coaches only, for now.

Malpensa Express: the train to Milano Centrale and Cadorna

Both Malpensa terminals have a station for the Malpensa Express, Trenord’s airport train, and four trains an hour leave for Milan: two to Milano Centrale and two to Cadorna. The Centrale trains take about 51 minutes from Terminal 1, calling at Bovisa and Porta Garibaldi on the way. The Cadorna trains take about 37, and Cadorna is on the M1 and M2 metro lines. From Terminal 2, add about six minutes to either.

Terminal 2 is easyJet’s base at Malpensa. A free shuttle bus, the Linea A, links the two terminals in about 10 minutes, though you won’t need it for the train, which stops at both.

The ticket we sell is the Malpensa Express between the airport and Milano Centrale, €15, from either terminal, and it comes on your phone. You need it before you board, as there are no sales on the train, and it can’t be cancelled. Our listing says there’s no limit on luggage.

Airport station to the Centrale metro

  1. 1Go to the Malpensa Express station in your terminal, Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
  2. 2Board a train for Milano Centrale. The Cadorna trains leave from the same station, so check the destination.
  3. 3Stay on to Milano Centrale. On the way, at Porta Garibaldi, you can get off for the M2 and M5.
  4. 4At Centrale, change to the M2 or the M3 for the rest of the city.

ATM city tickets and the contactless tap that works on the metro aren’t valid on this train. For your flight home, the same service runs from Centrale to the airport:

The first trains from the airport leave at 5:37 from Terminal 2 and 5:43 from Terminal 1, and the last at 00:20 and 00:26. Heading out to Malpensa, there’s a train every 30 minutes from Cadorna, 4:57 to 23:27, and from Centrale, 5:25 to 23:25.

On strike days Trenord runs a replacement coach between Cadorna and Terminal 1, from Via Paleocapa 1 by Cadorna station, and our listing promises a bus if a strike cancels your train.

Malpensa airport bus to Milano Centrale

The coach is the other way in from Malpensa. The airport bus between Malpensa and Milano Centrale costs €10 one way and €16 for a return, with a reduced fare for children aged 2 to 11.

In Milan the airport coaches stop on the Piazza Luigi di Savoia side of Centrale. The road takes around 40 minutes at weekends and an hour or more on weekday mornings, so leave room in your plans if you land on a weekday morning.

Malpensa taxis: €114 to anywhere in Milan

A taxi from Malpensa to any address in Milan costs a fixed €114, in either direction. The Lombardy region set it in July 2024 and confirmed it in 2026, so the €90 to €110 still quoted by older guides no longer applies. The same regional tariff fixes €94 to Fiera Milano, in Rho, and €128 to Linate airport.

The rank is outside arrivals on the ground floor, at door 6 in Terminal 1 and door 4 in Terminal 2. Only Milan’s own taxis have to keep to the fixed fare, and a driver from elsewhere can run the meter, so ask for the €114 before you set off.

Linate airport to the city centre on the M4 metro

Linate is the quickest of the three: the M4, the blue metro line, runs from its station to San Babila in 12 minutes, and San Babila is a change for the M1. You ride on an ordinary ATM ticket, €2.20 for 90 minutes (October 2026), and contactless cards and the YesMilano pass work at the gates.

The 73 and X73 buses that used to serve Linate stopped running in July 2023.

Bergamo airport (Orio al Serio) to Milan by coach

Orio al Serio, outside Bergamo, mainly handles low-cost flights, Ryanair and Wizz Air above all, and it markets itself as Milan Bergamo. There’s no train from the terminal yet, since the direct rail link has been put back to December 2027, so for now Milan means a coach.

The motorway into Milan is often jammed, so if you have a train or a flight to catch, allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes. In Milan the coaches use the same side of Centrale as the Malpensa buses, Piazza Luigi di Savoia.

Landing late at a Milan airport

At Linate the metro keeps going until about half past midnight, and a night bus takes over. At Malpensa the last train leaves just after midnight, and we found no night timetable for the coaches, so plan on a taxi after that; at Bergamo the coaches stop somewhere between 23:30 and 1:00.

Do the YesMilano pass and ATM tickets reach the airports?

The YesMilano City Pass includes three days of ATM transport, and that takes you to Linate on the M4 but not to Malpensa or Bergamo, which lie outside the city zone. Ordinary ATM tickets end at the same boundary, and the transport card in the Milan City Card leaves out the airports. The rest of the network is on our page about Milan’s metro, trams and buses.
