Accademia Gallery

Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners line the hall, and David waits under the skylight at the end.

Florence's Accademia Gallery is where Michelangelo's David stands, under the glazed dome of the Tribuna, at the end of a hall lined with the Prisoners, figures Michelangelo left half-freed from the marble. Every ticket covers the David, the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions, and our cheapest one adds an audio guide app. Under-18s go in free, and the Firenze Card counts the gallery as an included entry.

Accademia Gallery tickets: entry with the app, the plain entry and the Uffizi combo

Accademia Gallery tickets all get you in to see Michelangelo’s David, along with the permanent collection and whatever temporary exhibition is on. The one we sell for €29 adds an audio guide app you download to your phone.

Oddly, that costs less than our plain entry, the Entry Ticket at €29. That one also comes in versions with a digital audio guide, with the gallery’s official audio guide or as a hosted entry, so it’s the one to pick if you want the official guide. None of our Accademia tickets can be cancelled or refunded.

You don’t have to book, but the gallery highly recommends it: without a booking, it says, the wait to get in may be long.

If the Uffizi, Florence’s great painting gallery, is on your list too, the Uffizi and Accademia combo costs €69.50. You pick one option for each museum: priority entry, an audio guide or a guided tour at the Uffizi, and the ticket, a hosted entry or a guided tour at the Accademia, with the Vox audio guide app on top.

On the Firenze Card the Accademia is an included entry, though you still book a time, and that booking is compulsory and free. There’s no online way to do it: you book by phone or at a ticket office, and on the day you go in through the priority door for people with a reservation.

Booking the Accademia by phone with the Firenze Card

  1. 1Call +39 055 294883 and choose your language.
  2. 2Press 3 for Firenze Card reservations, then 1 to give your consent.
  3. 3Give each cardholder's first name and surname, children on the card included, and you get a booking code.
  4. 4On the day, show the card and the code at the priority door.

You can also book in person at one of the Firenze Card ticket offices: My Accademia, at Via Ricasoli 105r, Orsanmichele or the Bargello. Don’t count on the first entry of the day, though: one 2026 guide found the 8:15 slots usually aren’t offered to cardholders. Turn up with the card and no booking and there’s no priority door for you.

The card only pays off when the Accademia is one of several paid museums on your list. With the Accademia and the Uffizi alone, the two tickets cost less than the card, and our Firenze Card and Florence’s other passes page works out which one suits your list.

The Uffizi’s five-day Passepartout and the Duomo passes don’t include the Accademia. You buy the Firenze Card online before your trip and start its 72 hours at the first museum.

Whichever way you get in, the times changed this year. Since 15 March 2026 the Accademia shares its timetable with the Bargello, so a guide with older hours is out of date.

Through the Hall of the Prisoners to Michelangelo’s David

You don’t come upon the David all at once. He’s there at the end of a long hall lined on both sides with Michelangelo’s Prisoners, also called the Slaves, figures the sculptor left unfinished and still half in the rough marble. He’s in view the whole way down.

At the end of the hall he stands in the Tribuna, an apse with a coffered half-dome, framed by grey stone pilasters, with a glazed dome above letting the daylight in.

Walk round him and look up. From below you see the curled hair, the gaze turned to one side and the left hand raised to the shoulder.

Your ticket also takes you through the rest of the gallery: the musical instruments wing on the ground floor, the exhibition rooms on the first floor and the temporary exhibition on at the time of your visit.
